Many people in the U.S. get SSI (Supplemental Security Income) every month. It helps seniors, people with disabilities, and people with very low income. In May 2025, some people will get two SSI payments. Sometimes, this sounds like a bonus from SSA, but we should understand that it’s not extra money. It’s just a co-incidents in the calendar changes.
May be it is a more interesting update for you and it should be. Hereafter, SSI and Overall Social Security is the backbone for many of US Citizens, so I will try to make it more clear why this happens and what it means for you.
Why Two SSI Payments in May?
Generally, SSI payments come on the 1st of each month, but sometimes that date falls on a weekend or holiday. That is why it leads to the situation that Social Security Administration (SSA) sends the payment earlier and in some situtation, they send two times a week. In June 2025, the 1st is on a Sunday. So, SSA will send that payment early — on May 30.
That means you will get two payments in May:
- One on May 1
- One on May 30 (this is actually the June payment)
Is This Extra Money?
No, it’s not.
Even though you get two payments in May, you won’t get any in June. The May 30 payment is just the June check sent early. It may feel like a bonus now, but it’s not. So, don’t spend it all at once. You’ll need it for June.
Who Will Get Both Payments?
To get both payments, you must meet these rules:
- You must be getting SSI in both May and June
- You must have very low or no income
- Your resources must be under the limit:
- $2,000 for a single person
- $3,000 for a couple
- You must be a U.S. citizen or have approved immigration status
Also, your SSI must not be on hold. You must follow all program rules and respond to reviews from SSA. If everything is okay, you don’t need to do anything. SSA will send your payments automatically.
How Much Is the SSI Payment?
Here are the maximum SSI amounts in 2025:
Household Type | Monthly SSI Amount |
---|---|
Single Person | $967 |
Couple | $1,450 |
These amounts may change based on your income or other help you get. The cost-of-living raise was already added in January 2025.
